A Brief History of the Club

Welcome to the website for Dorchester Bowls Club. Known for our "Friendly" approach to the wonderful game
of bowls and the way we treat all our visitors, we hope you find the following information about us helpful and informative.
Here are a few facts about us.
The Dorchester Bowling Club was formed in 1906 and played at the Borough Gardens
until 1990 when it moved to the newly created Sandringham Centre in Armada Way
where it now enjoys excellent indoor and outdoor facilities.
Play in 1906 was restricted to three short rinks and cost members 4d (about 2p) a game. Today, at its Sandringham H.Q.
the club enjoys the pleasure of a 40 metre outdoor green and a six rink indoor facility.
In 2006 it changed its name to Dorchester Bowls Club and also marked its centenary with a special Celebration Game
against the English Bowling Association (now called Bowls England) held on 18th of May.
The local M.P. Oliver Letwin gave a speech and a number of local Town and District Council
officials were also present to mark the occasion.
The Club was a founder member of the Dorset County BA in 1921
and the Dorset County Indoor Bowling Association in 1985.
Today, as it has been for a number of years, the Club is the Headquarters of Bowls Dorset - formerly Dorset County Bowling Association.
During its existence the Club has provided many Officials, Representatives
and Champions of both associations as well as the National Associations.
The Club has a strong competitive membership and is represented in all County and National leagues and competitions. Amongst its members
are the current Ladies England Indoor Champion of Champions and the Men’s Outdoor National Pairs Champions as well as an
under 25 Men’s outdoor
The vast majority of our membership, however, simply enjoy playing bowls and socialising within the Club Leagues
or the many friendly matches played against visiting teams from around the country.
